Jo Watko
Running through the work is ——a———thread of element———material——behavior. Much of this thread is informed by processes in nature and our connection or distance to them. Rock, wood, and my pantry form the foundation of much of this exploration through the use of ceramics, paper, as well as ink and paint making techniques. My work has ranged from larger paintings and drawings, installation sculpture, to utilitarian vessels. It is a way to ground oneself. Appreciating the way material acts offers a window into larger mechanisms organizing the natural world. It can be as simple as taking a sip of coffee and letting your eye catch the patterns on the cup’s surface.
